JEERAKASALA / Gobindobhog Rice is an aromatic, sticky white rice, that is exclusively cultivated in the paddy fields of West Bengal state of India. The rice is awarded as GI (Geographical Indication) tag by the Government of India and the GI number is 531.
It is one Such Aromatic Variety of Rice very popular in West Bengal. Unlike the long-grained and fluffy Basmati rice, Gobindobhog is short-grained and sticky. It is locally grown and cultivated in many areas in Bengali and is prized for its wonderful aroma. It is said that the protein content in Gobindobhog rice is absorbed much better by the body than in brown rice. Easily digestible and nourishing, this rice variant is used in Ayurveda for treating imbalances in the body.
Gobindo bhog rice is also known as Jeera rice or Bhog rice across other parts of the country. It’s also called Ambemohar rice in MP. Katarni, a superior fine grain variety is an indigenous Ceremonial Rice exclusively grown in Bihar and is known for its pleasant fragrance, a local relish and excellent cooking quality. Katarni literally means an awl with a hook at the end for sewing. Strangely enough, the shape of its husk actually resembles the tip of an awl! The rice is also awarded as GI (Geographical Indication) tag by the Government of India in 2017 and the GI number is 553.
This short-grain rice is the most widely grown ceremonial scented rice in Bihar and is famous for its palatability and cheura (beaten rice) that is sweet, soft and fragrant. The cooked rice is fluffy, non sticky, sweet and easily digestible with a popcorn-like aroma. Katarni Rice is classified under the hard aroma group and is mainly termed as a kheer and khichdi rice.
Katarni rice is high in protein and carbohydrates. It is gluten-free and has almost no cholesterol. Vitamin B and minerals such as iron are also present in plenty.
